Untitled (Self-Reflection) is a project realized during a two-month artist-in-residency at Yan Garden, China, in 2019.
Incorporating multi-channel video installation, on-site closed-circuit projection, sounds, and photographs, this project explores some of my long-term interests, such as space and time, the concept of duality, as well as the medium of photography. It evokes a hybrid perception of the architectural space by establishing connections between exteriors and interiors, images and words, presence and absence. The electronic space (screen) mimics the physical environment; the virtual images echo the printed photographs. A closed-circuit camera brings the daylight and sunset into the room and thus becomes a meditative light. A tape recorder plays a conversation (which is similar to an informal Q&A) between the artist, the artist assistant, and the project manager, recorded in the studio. Overall, my intention is to create a perceptual situation with a self-reflective approach.
