BIOGRAPHY
Incorporating photography, time-based media, and installations, Jiehao Su’s artistic practice utilizes the notion of in-betweenness as a point of departure and enters into the realm of experience and phenomenology. His recent work adopts an intersectional approach to explore themes such as memory, the materiality of the image, and the perception of space.
Su's film The Storm In The Morning has been screened at venues including ACUD Kunsthaus Berlin, Kijkhuis Leiden, Watson Theater Syracuse, UCCA Beijing, Peking University, and Harvard University. It has received the Tide Award from Beijing International Short Film Festival (BISFF). His work has been exhibited in international solo and group exhibitions at institutions such as the Musée du Quai Branly (Paris, France), NRW Forum (Düsseldorf, Germany), Benaki Museum (Athens, Greece), UNM Art Museum (Albuquerque, U.S.), QUAD Gallery (Derby, UK), Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich (Belfast, UK), United Photo Industries Gallery (New York City, U.S.), Actual Size (Los Angeles, U.S.), Galerie Zur Schützenlaube (Visp, Switzerland), and Three Shadows Photography Art Centre (Beijing, China).
Su's photography work has been featured in The New Yorker, The California Sunday Magazine, British Journal of Photography, FT Magazine, Le Monde, IMA Magazine, Voice of Photography, China Life Magazine, Artforum, and Chinese Photography, among other publications. His first monograph “Beijing: Sites and Structures” was published by Fondazione OAMi in Italy in 2019. Su is included in the Ones to Watch by the British Journal of Photography and Magnum 30 Under 30. He has received the Gabriele Basilico Prize in Italy, the Arte Creative Award from Düsseldorf Portfolio Review, the IdeasTap Award from Format Photo Festival, and the Grand Prize from Feature Shoot Emerging Photography Awards. Su was nominated for the First Book Award of Mack Books in the UK and the Prix Pictet Photography Award in Switzerland.
Su received an M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He has been a resident artist at Independent AIR (Denmark), SMArt (Switzerland), Light Work (U.S.), AIR Krems (Austria), and Yan Garden (China). He has been a visiting lecturer at the Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies at Harvard University, as well as the Department of Photography at RISD. He is currently based in Providence, RI, USA.
